Lead apron and protective garment testing

Inspection of your hospital’s lead aprons, thyroid shields and other radiation protective garments, with a clear record for every item.

What we test

  • Lead and lead-equivalent aprons: wraparound, front-only, vest and skirt
  • Thyroid shields
  • Protective gloves
  • Gonadal and other patient shields
  • Protective drapes and other wearable shielding

How it works

Done on site, department by department, with as little disruption to the schedule as possible.

  1. 1

    Inventory

Every garment is listed with its location, type, size, lead equivalence as labelled, and an ID, so each one can be followed from year to year.

  2. 2

    Visual and tactile check

Outer covers, seams, straps and fasteners, and a hands-on check for folds, thinning and breaks in the shielding.

  3. 3

    Imaging check

X-ray imaging of the garment to find cracks, holes and gaps inside the shielding that cannot be seen from outside.

  4. 4

    Report

A result for each garment against your facility’s rejection criteria, with the location and size of any defect and images where it matters.

What you receive

  • A garment-by-garment record

Pass or remove from service for each item, with the reason, ready for your radiation safety file.

  • A replacement list

Which garments to take out of use, and which to watch at the next inspection.

  • An updated inventory

Including new garments and ones that could not be found, with the date each is next due.

How often garments are inspected, and the criteria for removing one from service, follow your facility’s radiation safety program and the requirements that apply in your state. We work to those, and can help you set them if they are not yet written down.
